Cyber Storm Hits UK Stores: UK Giants Struggle as IT Outages Disrupt Transactions

In recent weeks, top UK retailers like McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Greggs were hit by crippling IT outages, disrupting cashless payment systems throughout the UK and leaving countless customers stranded at the checkout.

The attacks which caused difficulties in making card transactions, forcing some stores to shut temporarily, have exposed the vulnerability of modern payment systems. As cashless transactions constitute more than 65% of payments in the UK, these failures have had significant financial repercussions.

Jenny Holt, Co-Founder of LANternTech underlined the need for stronger cybersecurity measures, citing recent cyber attacks on major UK retailers. She also noted that technology advancements are changing the way we conduct business.

“As technology continues to transform business practices, from remote work setups to reliance on cloud services and AI, it introduces numerous security vulnerabilities. To navigate this treacherous digital terrain, companies must proactively adapt and enhance their cybersecurity strategies to align with the swiftly evolving landscape.”
